The Real Thing: On my trip to Tennessee last week, I realized one thing: the weakness of the coffee would kill me if I lived there. Nothing against the Maxwell House name, and I’m sure it is fine coffee for people used to it, but the curse of getting used to dark coffee is that the milder Colombian stuff just doesn’t get the job done.

The Real Thing: My daughter Mary Beth informs me that The Barge, the campus coffeehouse at Colgate University and her employer, has shipped out two pounds of Colgate Blend to a South Dakota man, based on my review of the black gold in a recent column. You won’t regret it, sir. That’s a strong, delicious cup of Green Mountain coffee.

The Real Thing: You want a good, strong, not overly oppressive cup of coffee? I mean, borderline French Roast, with about 75 percent of the bite? Colgate Blend, from The Barge in Hamilton, N.Y. Drank it most of the weekend, and I’m going to have order some more.

The Real Thing: Starbucks just can’t get the egg nog latte right. Still has sort of a metallic taste, and I’ve tried them at five stores. It’s not bad, just pretty average. By the way, I’ve been delinquent in praising the baristas in Upper Montclair, who are on one heck of an efficient roll. Great roster of worker-bee gals there, Seattle.
